Kendall (NSW) has won the AO Blitz and has chosen No.1 ranked male Rafael Nadal to cheer for during Australian Open 2014. Rafa has instantly increased his fan base by a whole town due to Kendall’s outstanding efforts in the nation-wide Tennis Australia campaign.
Kendall had the choice of the top seed from either the Men’s or Women’s draw, either Rafael Nadal or Serena Williams, effectively becoming a whole-town cheer squad for their nominated player. The AO Blitz will align all main draw players, 128 men and 128 women, with 256 towns across Australia.
There has been a fierce rivalry between the top four townsduring the interactive online competition and with that, last minute changes to the top spots. The top 4 towns and their assigned player are as follows:
1. Rafael Nadal – Kendall (NSW)
2. Serena Williams – Cooroy (QLD)
3. Novak Djokovic – Parkes (NSW)
4. Victoria Azarenka – Moorooduc (VIC)
As part of the AO Blitz initiative more than 103 towns staged community participation days, 73,000+ people participated and more than 35,000 challenges were completed in the online competition.
The winner of the brand new Kia Sportage car, drawn today, is Paul Calicetto, coincidentally from top town Kendall on the New South Wales’ north coast, was randomly drawn from all registered AO Blitz participants. Paul was an active and enthusiastic participant in the AO Blitz, accumulating a total of 182,900 points.
‘The AO Blitz was an enormous amount of fun and it brought the whole community together,” Paul Calicetto said.
“The committee of Kendall Tennis club worked tirelessly to ensure that we enjoyed every moment of the AO Blitz, and it was a great initiative from Tennis Australia. My whole family got involved and I am so grateful for the amazing prize.’
“The entire township will be excited,” Wendy Hudson from the Kendall Tennis club and major driver of the town’s AO Blitz effort, said today.
“Paul’s family are right behind the club – they’ve just called me and were so thrilled to tell me they’d won the car. They’re very involved in the community and it’s been great to see how much they’ve enjoyed their involvement in the Blitz.”
The AO Blitz prizes yet to be drawn are as follows:
- MLC Tennis Hot Shots mini-court – awarded to schools with the most points and registered players
- The ultimate club package prize package will go to the tennis club with the highest number of points, and the highest ranked clubs in each state and territory.
The two Australian towns aligned with the eventual Australian Open singles winners will win an all-inclusive AO Blitz spectacular tennis party early in 2014.
